Cartesian: Young and innovative face of swedish metal (Interview)

New project for new metal band. Cartesian.

These young guys are working hard to bring something new in the metal scene. They live in Sweden, one of the lands of biggest metal tradition. This interview will show us their philosophy and their way to see metal music.

  • How is Cartesian Project born? And how long have you been playing together?

Cartesian was born when William Zackrisson (guitar) and Alexander Evans (vocals) who formerly played in melodic hardcore-act Vona, decided to continue playing music together along with our close friend Victor Jansson (vocals) after Vona stopped being a band in 2015.  We all wanted to start playing heavier music, and after we released our first album MCCCL in 2016 we found the rest of our band-members that is Gabriel (guitar) & Magnus (drums) and started rehearsing frequently/writing new music. Our latest addition to the crew is Adrian (bass) that joined late 2017 to replace our former bass-player Emanuel.

  • How is the band name Cartesian born?

Cartesian originates from the famous philosopher René Descartes, most famous for the quote ”I think, therefore I am”.

  • Who is the lyrics composer??? And who choices the themes?

Alexander Evans writes all our lyrics and is behind the concepts of all our songs. He also writes the majority of our music in-between other editing jobs he does at random. He was the master behind the concept of our album, a story which continue in our new song ’Bleed The Requiem”.

  • Music for you is only a passion or are you working to make this a job?

It is definitely all of ours biggest passion, and we all want to be able to support ourself by playing our music. But since the music industry is a very unpredictable one we all have side jobs to help support our passion. Though, William (guitar), Adrian (bass) and Magnus (drums) studied music, William is also looking to become a music teacher. Alexander (vocals) is also aspiring to be a music engineer.

  • Who are the bands that influence you? Or better who are the bands that you love to listen to?

We were heavily influenced by The Mire while starting up the project, we also listened to a lot of Deafheaven. But lately, for our single ’Bleed The Requiem’ and the upcoming EP of which that song will be included  we have taken influence from bands such as Thy Art Is Murder and Fit For An Autopsy as well.

Apart from that we have some bands that all of our members really enjoy listening too. Conjurer is a great band for example, Despised Icon, Architects, the list goes on…

  • Many successful bands are born from Sweden and there is a ‘legend’ that in your nation is very simple to make music, there is no prejudice about it and metalheads, it is simple to study music (what I mean is that you are helped to study music) and so on. Is it really so simple?

Sweden has, for the last century, been pretty significant in the music industry, and especially in the last couple of decades metal has blossomed in our country. I would say from my own experience that you absolutely have an opportunity to study music here if you do want, we have very good cultural program to help kids learn how to play instruments from a pretty early age (if they want, of course) and a lot of good schools for it.

Basically I’d say that the state does a pretty good job  encouraging young people to turn to music as an alternative to say, sports for example. And our schools and programs makes it quite easy to fulfil that passion!

  • I listened to many of your songs from MCCCL and also to your last song “Bleed the Requiem”. I found a substantial difference. The first album is like death/heavy core with growl and clean voice, in your last song I found a sort of evolution. Did this change happen in a ‘natural’ way or you thought that you needed to do something a bit different?

That’s very true, there has been a very natural evolution of our sound. When we wrote the album ’MCCCL’ we were only 3 members and we had some different influences than now. Since we became a 6-part band we have gotten a lot of new influences from our new members and it all has really been very natural progression. We all agree that we are heading in the right direction music-wise, all-though we are very proud of MCCCL we feel that our new single and coming EP is and will be a big step-up!

  • Look at the future: how do you see Cartesian?

In the near future, we will be seen on stages across Europe playing our asses off and releasing our first EP.

But, in the bigger picture, all of us have really dedicated ourselves whole-heartedly to this project and hope to become a full time touring band, so that we can focus entirely on bringing new innovative metal to the world. We all are very determined to make that happen, so that we can bring something new and exciting to the world of metal!
